Pflanzenkohle im kommunalen Kontext – Biochar in the Urban Context

November 09. + 10. 2018, Bjoernsen Beratende Ingenieure, Maria Trost 3, Koblenz, Germany

Conference – Call for Abstracts – extended deadline

Please note, that this conference’s main language will be German. We are currently organizing simultaneous translation.

Biochar is a product of thermal carbonization (pyrolysis) of vegetable biomass. While biochar is mostly known for its use in agriculture, usually in products inspired by Terra Preta, biochar also offers manifold applications in cities and municipalities. The conference Biochar in the Urban Context by the Fachverband Pflanzenkohle e.V. (German Biochar Association) will highlight the opportunities in this field. The following speakers are already confirmed:

  • Bjorn Embrén (City of Stockholm): The Stockholm biochar project and planting urban trees on biochar
  • Bruno Glaser (University Halle-Wittenberg):
  • Nikolaus Foidl: Umwandlung von biologischen Abfällen und Gärresten in recycelbare Wertstoffe am Beispiel von Klärschlamm (Transformation of biowaste and digestate into recyclable resources using the example of sludge)
  • (University of Stuttgart / Ökoservice GmbH): Pflanzenkohle in Kleinkläranlagen (Biochar in small sewage treatment plants)

We are now looking for additional contributions from practitioners and scientists on production and application of biochar in the context of green-waste-recycling, urban gardening, maintenance of parks, public green and roadside vegetation, sewage treatment, power generation and many more aspects of communal scope.

In addition to presentations and discussion breaks, the conference also offers space for interactive workshops (approx. 2-3 hours) that enable intensive knowledge exchange on specific topics. Participants will be able to select one of these workshops on the conference registration. We are now looking for applicants who want to prepare and host one of these workshops on a biochar-related topic.
